Originally known as a “Red Devil”, the Cape Cod came to its name thanks to a trend of naming juice-based cocktails after East Coast sea-based locales. Stay tuned for the Sea Breeze, Bay Breeze, Sex on the Beach, the Cosmo, and of course the Rose Kennedy. We know: a slew of cocktails inspired by where the Kennedy family is from? Can’t imagine how that happened.
Our favorite Portland Potato Vodka was chosen for the mixture, with its famous well-balanced flavor. As for cranberry juice, the Cape Cod is one case though where using a commonly available brand is more acceptable; Ocean Spray. We do this because they take the credit for creating the cocktail in the first place in 1945 under the original “Red Devil” name before it was re-christened as the “Cape Cod” in the 60’s when the Massachusetts vacation spot was at its peak.
Some try to nickel-and-dime patrons by serving the Cape Cod in a lowball glass, but we insist on the original highball poured over ice, sipped through a straw, garnished with a lime wedge. The tartness of the cranberry juice nicely compliments the full-bodied kick of the vodka. Drop the lime wedge in there for some extra zing.
