The old fashioned is the quintessential whiskey cocktail, perhaps the original whiskey cocktail, and is still a go-to drink for any occasion. Made carefully, this sweet delight inspires opinions of all kinds, and we’re no different. We don’t always stick to tradition, and we’re firmly on the side of making an old fashioned with simple syrup, and garnishing with an orange peel. We don’t mind using sugar, but the simple syrup eliminates the grittiness of granulated sugar, and adds some water to the drink, but the choice of sweetener and garnish is pure preference, as is the choice of whiskey. For a sweeter old fashioned, we like bourbon, specifically, Burnside Bourbon by Eastside Distilling, one of the makers on Distillery Row in East Portland. Corn dominates this bourbon, and brings that corn sweetness that makes for an almost spice candy like old fashioned. Tempered by the whiskey’s vanilla and caramel notes, along with the aromatic bitters, a Burnside Bourbon old fashioned is sweet, but not too sweet. Here’s our recipe.
2 oz (60ml) Burnside Bourbon
1 tsp (5ml) simple syrup
3 dashes Scrappy’s Aromatic Bitters
Add ice to a rocks glass, then build the drink in the glass. Stir once, just enough to mix, and garnish with an orange peel.
